Geçmişte doktorlar çoğunlukla beyaz önlük giyerdi. Ancak sterilizasyonun öneminin artması, güçlü cerrahi ışıkların kullanılması ve ameliyatlarda yaşanan görsel zorluklar sonucunda mavi ve yeşil önlükler 20. yüzyılda yaygınlaşmaya başladı. Kısa sürede cerrahlar için standart hale geldi.
